Singapore, Sassicaia & Seriously Good Wines

Singapore, Sassicaia & Seriously Good Wines: A Week to Remember

In early December, Chris from Bass Phillip reached out with a casual mention of an epic wine event in Singapore set for January. I booked my flights that same day.

Little did I know just how stratospheric this trip would be.

Singapore is absolutely buzzing right now one of the hottest wine scenes in the world, backed by next-level restaurants, unbeatable street food, and a wine community that knows its stuff. Huge thanks to Chris for bringing me along on what became a whirlwind of world-class wine, great company, and unforgettable experiences.

Joining me were two good mates from Sydney, Simon and Glenn, both diehard collectors with razor-sharp palates. From obscure Rieslings to elusive white Burgs, these two live and breathe fine wine. And we were about to taste with some of the biggest names in the game, think Jérôme Prévost, Lucca Roagna, and beyond.

Cue your favourite wine anthem (mine? "Everyday" – A$AP Rocky feat. Rod Stewart), because this trip hit all the high notes.

Stop One: Sassicaia Vertical at Mott 32
We kicked things off at the ultra-sleek Mott 32 in Marina Bay Sands for a private Sassicaia vertical tasting. Hosted by none other than the estate’s ambassador.

We tasted the 2019, 2020 and 2021 vintages side-by-side, with in-depth commentary from Guido on Bolgheri’s unique terroir and the Sassicaia philosophy.
The 2020 stood out for me, structured, graceful, and seriously age-worthy but all three vintages were outstanding.

Add in Mott32’s sensational food and flawless service, and you’ve got a pretty unforgettable tasting. For the Sassicaia nerds: annual production is around 180,000 bottles, give or take.

Park90 x Bass Phillip & Blind Icons
Next stop: Park90, an exclusive lounge in the Conrad Hotel that’s fast becoming one of Asia’s wine hotspots.

The team welcomed us with genuine curiosity and enthusiasm to explore Bass Phillip's latest releases. We tasted through the lineup and shared our thoughts on Jean-Marie Fourrier’s impact as the new winemaker and how the wines are now fully destemmed and built for serious ageing.

That same night? A spontaneous blind tasting of absolute icons:

Giaconda Chardonnay 2010 & 2022 (thanks Glenn!)

Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche 1999 hauntingly beautiful (Cheers Simon!)

GAJA Sori San Lorenzo 2005 a strong contender for wine of the night

Truly electric energy in the room. Big bottles, big discussions, and brilliant vibes all round.

Fruits of the Vine: A Global Wine Celebration at the Grand Hyatt
If you’re a true wine lover, you need to add Fruits of the Vine to your calendar.
Held at the Grand Hyatt, this showcase brought together some of the most exciting producers on the planet including:

Bass Phillip

Domaine Fourrier

00Wines

Roagna

Coche Dury

Bonneau du Martray

Sassicaia

We poured at the Bass Phillip table alongside Chris, chatting through everything from vineyard practices to the future under Jean-Marie’s leadership. The response? Phenomenal. There's a genuine appetite in Asia for thoughtful, terroir-driven Australian wine.

Highlights from our fellow producers:

Domaine Fourrier (Burgundy/France): Elegant, expressive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Seek these out.

00Wines (Oregon/USA): Oregon minimalism meets serious complexity.
The Richard Hermann Cuvée will change the way you think about new world Chardonnay.

Roagna (Barbaresco/Italy): Classic, powerful Barolo and Barbaresco. Lucca was on fire.

Coche Dury (Burgundy/France): No words. Nectar of the white Burgundy gods.
Just try it.

Sassicaia (Tuscany/Italy): Pure class in every pour from one of the greats in Tuscany.

The event was a hit a genuine celebration of fine wine, shared knowledge, and deep appreciation from attendees who really knew their stuff. I was especially impressed by the local crowd's understanding of Burgundy. Seriously sharp.
